Mohamed Ataur Rahman and Árpád Göncz

Indian diplomat Mohamed Ataur Rahman served as Chargé d’Affaires at the Embassy of India in Budapest between 1956 and 1959. During and after the revolution, István Bibó and Árpád Göncz maintained continuous contact with Chargé Rahman, who effectively acted as a liaison between them and Indian Prime Minister Nehru. He conveyed letters written by the political leadership behind the revolution and prepared reports on the situation in Hungary; furthermore — according to some records — it was with his assistance that Ervin Baktay managed to travel to India on November 22, 1956, where he met Nehru in person and briefed the Prime Minister on the situation in Hungary.

Without publicly condemning the Soviet military intervention, Nehru — through lobbying and diplomatic efforts involving Khrushchev, Kádár, and the UN — most likely contributed to the fact that the final verdict in the Bibó–Göncz trial was life imprisonment rather than the death penalty.
